Political Cartoon Crtique

To Start:
Get out the second draft of your political cartoon, and your project checkpoint sheet.

In Class:
Critique Your Cartoon
  • Roles:
    • Artist
    • Timekeeper
    • Facilitator
    • Summarizer/Scribe

  • Cartoon-in-Progress Critique Protocol:
    • Artist offers a focusing question, perspective, or specific areas where they would like feedback. (1 minute)
    • The group discusses the cartoon, without the artist's input. (3 minutes)
      • What perspective they think the cartoon is trying to convey.
      • What cartooning devices they see, and how those impact the cartoon.
      • Strengths of the cartoon, things they like about it.
      • Improvements and suggestions for revision.
    • The artist responds to the feedback. (1 minute)

  • Completed Cartoon Crtiqiue Protocol
    • The group examines the cartoon. (1 minute)
    • The group discusses how well the cartoon completes each of the standards, how they would score it, and why. (3 minutes)
    • The scribe records the agreed-upon final score and feedback. (1 minute)

Revise your Op-Ed.
  • To revise effectively you will need to critically engage with your work, reading and rereading it as you refine. While my comments in the margin are meant to help you, just resolving them will not be enough to earn you full credit. Focus your attention on the areas I identify in my note to you.

At Home:
Continue revising your political cartoon and Op-Ed. Final drafts are due Friday.

Political Cartooning Techniques

In Class:
  • We're discussing the elements of effective political cartoons.
  • Then we're analyzing these four cartoons.
  • Finally, we're brainstorming ideas for our own political cartoons and getting to work! 

At Home:
Finish a rough draft of your cartoon for our gallery walk at the start of class tomorrow. Use at least three of the techniques we talked about today, and expresses the same perspective as your Op-Ed.
