To Start:
Examine this political cartoon, published in a US newspaper in 1899. Write at least two paragraphs explaining:
  • What is literally happening in this cartoon?
  • What figurative message is the artist trying to convey?
  • What does this cartoon make you think or feel?

If you feel stuck think about:
  • What do the two men stand for?
  • Who do the people in the baskets stand for?
  • What do the rocks stand for?
  • What's at the top of the hill?

In Class:
  • We are reading and analyzing Rudyard Kipling’s (in)famous poem, The White Man’s Burden.
  • You can also take on a challenge extension, to read and analyze a response poem independently.
  • Then, we'll have some time to read Things Fall Apart and consider what countries we would like to research and write about for our project.

For Reading:

Chapter 13
  1. Why is the town called by the ekwe? Why does a cold shiver run down Okonkwo's spine when the man’s name was mentioned?
  2. What is the author saying about Ibo culture when he writes that “The land of the living is not far removed from the domain of the ancestors?” Why would heaven and earth be closer together in this culture?
  3. What crime does Okonkwo commit during the funeral? What is Okonkwo’s punishment?
  4. Why does the tribe take the incident so seriously, when it was an honest mistake?

Upcoming:
  • Reading logs for chapters one through fourteen are due Friday. Use the same Google Document you have already shared with me.
  • Country selections are due on Monday. When you're ready add your name to the spreadsheet in Google Classroom and press turn in.
